Introducing Myself
Hello all!
My name is Joryan Dunlap and I am approaching my final year here at UAF. I am working on completing my Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in psychology and a minor in art. UAF is the fourth college I have attended in the span of five years and I am grateful it is where I have been able to remain for the rest of my undergraduate degree. I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, where I still currently reside today. When I am not behind my computer working on school I am working as a behavioral health associate. Through this job, I work with kids who have dealt with adverse childhood experiences or trauma, and who are in and out of the foster care system. It is a tough and wearing job, but absolutely worth it to see these kids thrive and grow into successful members of society. When I am not working, I am spending time with my two cats, Bubooski and King Boo, both girls with drastically different personalities. Outside of work, school, and home life, I love to explore art wherever possible. For as long as I can remember, art has been one of the best outlets for me to express myself and release any pent-up emotions. Whether it be listening to or making music, drawing, or simply appreciating the art of others. Art has always held a special place in my heart and that is something I carry with me everywhere I go. One of the toughest lessons I am still learning is that there is no such thing as bad art and it doesn't have to be perfect to be appreciated as art.
The art I chose for this assignment was taken last year during my weekend trip to Seattle with my mom and grandma. We visited the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit, which was filled with absolutely astonishing pieces of glass art as well as the history behind the creator of this art. I took the picture that I embedded below and I have also left the link to the official Chihuly website for those who want to find out more.
My relationship with art, as I said above, has been with me for as long as I can remember. I have always been and felt deeply connected to most if not all types of art. As an adult, I have expanded my opinions and responses to art, especially working with children and I have learned to appreciate art whenever I am given the opportunity to do so. My main and favorite method for creating art is through a digital medium, such as an iPad or a drawing tablet. I feel that I am less self-critical of the art I create when I am able to create via digital art. I do, however, challenge myself often to find other mediums that I am less comfortable using, to expand and strengthen my abilities. I am almost always open to trying a new form or medium for art, especially when it is something I haven't heard of. Though a lot of my time is booked up with work and school, I am making it more of a point to make time in my life for art appreciation and have several plans in the future to attend the local first Fridays here in Anchorage. I also hope to attend different art events in the States and different countries, once I have graduated, this way I have more time to appreciate the art.

ReplyDeleteI love the Chihuly Garden and Glass. Good for you for working with kids in the foster care system. So necessary.
ReplyDeleteI love glass art!! Growing up in Homer AK, I spent a lot of time looking for sea glass on the coast, and every once and awhile, I'd come across a full glass buoy. We would take all of the glass and glue it to a canvas to make an art piece, and it remains a highlight of my childhood.
