Art Analysis - Strange

Strange

For this project, I chose a visual art photograph taken by photographer Gregory Heisler. This piece was not given a name, that I could find, but was placed in a 2018 portfolio titled, Strange. In this piece, Tim Burton is surrounded by 11 hoses that are all being directed toward him. The first and most obvious visual element is Heisler's use of line to direct the viewer's attention to the center. To me, I thought the surrounding elements were snakes, which explained the chilling expression he had on his face. However, once I looked closer I realized they were hoses of different lengths with unique nozzles on the ends of each of them. Some have two connections to the nozzle and others just have one. The second use of visual elements is negative space. The spacing between Burton and the hoses fills out the general shape of a head and a body. The third visual element is the repetition of the hoses. Though they differ in small ways, there are still many of them repeating all around Burton's head.

Overall, this image is quite fascinating. There isn't much to it and yet each time I look at it, I feel like I have found something new. It is also a very fitting piece to feature Tim Burton as he is known for his creepy, black-and-white art style. I would absolutely own this piece if it were available as it is quite an eye-catching and thought-provoking piece of visual art.

  1. Hello, although I do appreciate modern art, I believe we were supposed to use the Italian Renaissance or Northern Renaissance as our muse for this assignment. However, your observations on the elements incorporated in the piece were accurate you could have expanded, showing you had further knowledge of the elements you used. As well as more background information on the piece, who made it, where was it made, and when was it made. You did say a photographer Gregory Hiester took the photo but who drew it? Based off of the shading and the hair texter it appears to be drawn rather than a photo. The art itself could be used to represent many different things which I liked. I'd also like to take note the hoses/ tubing appears to be lights, cameras possibly.
